There's Lead in Your Lipstick

There’s Lead in Your Lipstick

Toxins in Our Everyday Body Care and How to Avoid Them

Image002
By Gillian Deacon

By the time she heads out the front door ready to begin her day, the modern woman has spritzed, sudsed and slathered herself in more than 127 different chemicals, many of them toxic.  Over 23,000 chemicals are registered for use in the Canadian market, and about 300 new ones are added to that list every year!  Many of the creams and potions we depend on are made with a staggering number of mystery chemicals, many of which are more toxic than beautifying.  The average woman eats a third of a pound of lipstick a year; that’s a lot of less-than-tasty chemicals to ingest!

So, how can you get smart at the cosmetics counter and go green from head to toe?  Eco-expert Gillian Deacon will help you identify and understand the toxins and preservatives that are bad for your body and damaging to the earth, including formaldehyde in deodorant, nail polish, soap, shampoo, and shaving cream; coal tar in hair dyes; lead in lipsticks; and many more.  Her tips will guide you through the minefield of the cosmetics aisle, helping you choose the best options to keep yourself looking fabulous while safeguarding your health.

Packed with over 200 healthy and eco-friendly personal care and beauty ideas, There’s Lead in Your Lipstick includes:

·         Toxins and preservatives to avoid

·         How to read ingredient labels

·         Fabulous products available to keep you fresh and glowing – the natural way

·         Luxurious and easy-to-make natural beauty recipes

·         Resource list

There’s Lead in Your Lipstick is an indispensable handbook of personal care choices that are sustainable, both for your health and the earth.

Global Bee Emergency - What you can do - Act now

Bee-and-flowers
GLOBAL BEE EMERGENCY
Quietly, globally, billions of bees are dying, threatening our crops and
food. But a global ban of one group of pesticides could save bees from
extinction.
Four European countries have begun banning these poisons, and some bee
populations are recovering. But chemical companies are lobbying hard to
keep all killer pesticides on the market. A global outcry now for a ban in
the US and EU, where debate is raging, could provoke a total ban and a
ripple effect around the world.
Let's build a giant global buzz calling for these dangerous chemicals to be
outlawed in the US and EU until and unless they are proved to be safe. Sign
the petition to save bees and our crops and send this to everyone:

The film is a "love letter to Paris" and will screen opening night, May 11th, on the Croisette the same night that it opens on screens across France.  Robert De Niro is presiding as judge over the Film Festival this year, its 64th, as part of a Franco-American celebration and the celebrating of De Niro's  Tribeca Film Festival's 10th year.

Greening Hollywood was recently privileged to a conversation with co-producer of Midnight in Paris, Raphael Benoliel, who, theoretically, supports the notion of green film sets and eco-friendly film production. France is ramping up in a big way towards Eco Productions and green seems to be the talk of the town. Let's see if we can add some green to the Cote d'Azur!

Commuun Paris Runway Show F/W '11

By Paige Donner

Commuun is one of the few Designer labels showing in Paris regularly who sport an ethical fashion approach. And like their famous colleague (Stella) their front foot is on design with their inspiration derived from nature, a respect they carry forward into their fashion designs from collection to collection.

When asked backstage what is the one constant in their collections, Iku Furudate and Kaito Hori responded that sourcing organic textiles is one of their trademarks for their collections. This year's runway shows in Paris saw a lot of sheers, material that Commuun often uses in their collections.

Many of the fashion label's fans at this year's runway show in Paris held on March 7th agreed that this year's collection bears witness to the design duo's maturation and growth into their world-class label. Some of the textiles they used - all organically sourced - included an inversed velvet. The pops of color in the collection, too, are nature inspired and their name has nothing to do with "common" but rather references the concepts of community, communion and communication.

The NY trained, Tokyo originating design duo of Iku Furudate and Kaito Hori launched their label in 2005 which is also when they first began showing in Paris. In 2007 they won the LVMH and Longchamp ANDAM prizes.

Ginnifer Goodwin, Animal Rights Activist,  Advocates Adopt-A-Turkey

Ginnifer Goodwin is just one of these people who extend care and concern foranimals.  Her celebrity status currently is an advantage to spread this advocacy to the public.

She teamed up with Farm Sanctuary, a leading organization that upholds protection for farm animals to launch the Adopt-a-Turkey project.  Celebrated annually, the national program is designed to put a stop to the misery of turkeys which were raised commercially.  Particularly, the program educates the public and makes them realize the cruelties these animals endure, and being offered as an alternative when Thanksgiving celebration comes
