Fashion Forward - Mode A Paris

By Paige Donner

The designers this season are taking their lines forward. Fashion Forward is what we're seeing on the runways, backstage, on the streets and in the showrooms.

Fashion Forward - Paris Fashion Week 2010 for Spring Summer '11

From Galliano's Polynesian Sailor-on-shore-leave motif for Dior to John Paul Gaultier's flagrant use of 3-D glasses - for his runway show! - which consisted of every inch the three-dimensional plus-sized models in Joan Jett wigs. Beth Ditto, pouring out of her rosette-trimmed teddy for his finale stole the show.

Givenchy Goes Animal. Photo by Monica Feudi/ GoRunway.com

Givenchy went animal on us.  Raw and untamed, Riccardo Tisci delivered his models to pulsing Techno at the Lyceé Carnot.  Zippers snaked up side seams and flashes of metal punctuated the models' catwalk.
Eco-Alert: One lone Eco Taxi was spotted outside the Givenchy venue dropping off guests. Guests were holding letter-sized animal-print invitations printed on colored paper.
Change channels to Stella's show where only Vegans need apply. Lemons and grapefruit  spilled out everywhere. Glee actress 24-year-old Lea Michele, this month's Glamour Cover Girl, said it was the only show this fur-free animal lover was taking in on her first Paris Fashion season.

MORE CHLOÉ PHOTOS ON WWD.com
Chloé was all grown up and elegant...as usual. There's a reason why Jackie Kennedy, Grace Kelly and Brigitte Bardot have all worn Chloé. In a word, elegant.
Chloé delivered again today. The runway show was held at the Espace Ephémère in the Jardin des Tuileries, and though it started 45 minutes late, designer Hannah MacGibbon delivered to reggae-rasta-rap beats with Anna Wintour in her front row.  In a show of bright whites and nude beiges, the model wearing only a silk sheer blouse raised nary an eyebrow, though Grace Coddington, seated next to Wintour, seemed to take notice.
Somehow it doesn't surprise that Stella McCartney was at Chloé before she launched her own house.  On my way out, coming face to face with Anna Wintour gave me a jolt of thrills I hadn't expected. Is it from knowing that the woman commands a part of the billion dollar fashion industry?  Of course, only afterwards I realized I should have asked her what she thought of Eco Fashion. It's not very often this reporter is caught up in the excitement of a passing moment. Chloé had a packed house and a front row of editors, in addition to Wintour. Though it seemed that the focus of the show was also a bit of a perfume launch.

And to round this up for October 4th with only two more days of Fashion Week left, Mary-Kate and Ashley showed their new line The Row, by appointment in a lovely salon boasting a boiserie and soaring white ceilings. Elegant suits, freely-flowing bias-cut dresses all in silk satin back crepe. They kept their 15 outfits tight and to a palette of black, pale pink and ivory. That they weren't quite ready for N.Y. served them well. Where better than Paris to show your Spring Summer '11 line the first time?! Photos are now up on Bing.com.

Eco Bags Are Big! Previews From Paris Fashion Week

By Paige Donner

Louis Vuitton, Lancel, Stella McCartney...These are some of the biggest names in the fashion industry worldwide.

Each of them have debuted IT bags this year, and those bags happen to be Eco-friendly and/or Ethically oriented.

See More Photos of Ali and Bono wearing Edun and sporting LV on LouisVuittonJourneys.com. Photo by Annie Leibovitz.
Louis Vuitton Keepall 45 "Edun"
Louis Vuitton has partnered with Edun to design the limited edition Louis Vuitton monogrammed Keepall 45. The Every Journey Began In Africa joint ad campaign which features Edun designer Ali and her husband Bono wearing Edun ethical fashions and carrying the Keepall 45 LV tote as they step out of a small plane onto the sweeping grass plains of Africa can be found at LouisVuittionJourneys.com. Photographed by Annie Liebovitz, it is one of those ad campaigns that are the stuff of legends.

Louis Vuitton limited edition Keepall 45 "Edun" bag.
Edun is the fashion brand started in 2005 by Ali Hewson, Bono's wife, that is ethical, organic, and, since last year, 49% owned by LVMH luxury brands, the parent company of Louis Vuitton.
During Paris Fashion Week, Edun and Louis Vuitton will unveil a temporary Art Exhibit, Africa Rising, an exhibition of contemporary African Art, alongwith Edun's Spring collection and a showcase for the campaign.
The Louis Vuitton Keepall 45 Edun's signature charm on the bag (also sold separately) was handcrafted in Kenya by the fair-trade jewellery label MADE. It is the French firm's first made-in-Africa product.
All proceeds from sale of the LV Keepall 45 Edun bag, as well as the photo fees earned by Bono and Ali, will be donated to Technoserve and the Cotton Initiative. Pictures of some of the 800 organic cotton farmers who make up the Cotton Initiative are on the LVJourneyssite along with Ali speaking about the underpinnings of the (organic) Cotton Initiative and how EDUN is a fashion line she created to support this.
Its presence in a Vuitton campaign gives Edun  — and its mission to eradicate poverty through sustainable enterprise in Africa — international exposure, said LV's director of communications, Antoine Arnault.

The Stella McCartney Falabella
Stella McCartney, a life-long vegetarian, has always maintained that she will not use leather, animal skins, or fur in her designs.  This is the season, once again, of leather and fur but Stella's faux-leather Falabella Bag, the season's IT bag as far as celebrities such as Rihanna, J. Lo, and Kate Hudson are concerned, has that bred-in Rocker Chic without sacrificing one gram of Eco Ethics.

With winter's muted shades of camels and greys, the chain strap Stella McCartney Falabella Bag in snakeskin print goes with everything...and easily...from night to day.  McCartney has long been the leader in Eco Fashion, though she has never led with her green foot. Rather, her Fashion Forward sense has simply propelled her towards making superb calls on the world stage of  design and fashion that are aligned with her personal convictions. On her site, StellaMcCartney.com,  when you click on Green Me you will find quotes such as:
"The best thing you can do to help animals is to not eat or wear them. Let others know about the abuse that animals endure and ask them to say no to meat and leather too." - Stella McCartney

Lancel'S BB Bag, inspired and co-designed by Brigitte Bardot.  Bardot, a life-long animal rights defender, chose to use Eco-friendly and animal-friendly materials for her BB Bag by Lancel.
Lancel And Brigitte Bardot
Which brings us to LANCEL.  A revered leather goods and fashion icon brand in France and known the world over, their BB bag seduced not just the shores of St. Tropez this summer, but quickly became the must-have IT bag of fashionable, well-dressed women across the continents.
The Lancel BB bag was designed by (namesake) Brigitte Bardot who added personal touches to the bag such as the wide shoulder strap inspired by the guitar strap from when she strummed her strings on the famous Tropezienne shores between takes from the And God Created Woman film set back in the 50's.
Using a different approach, luxury leather goods company, Lancel, did not do an all-out campaign promoting the Eco-ethics of its bag. But anyone who knows anything about Brigitte Bardot would quickly realize that a bag designed by one of the most vocal animal rights activists on the planet would necessarily be leather-free.
To simulate leather/ suede the bag's rich dark chocolate incarnation is made from Alcantara, which looks every bit like suede and is soft and supple to the touch. In addition to the world of fashion, Alcantara is used in interior design features of yachts, and for interiors of the Maserati and Lamborghini.

Brigitte Bardot used her guitar strap as an inspiration for her BB Bag design. The Lancel BB Bag is Eco-Friendly and Cruelty Free.
The BB bag was designed to capture the feminine allure that Brigitte exuded as a film Goddess. The shape of the bag itself is reminiscent of a woman's hourglass figure.  No animals were harmed in the creation of the bag, it is entirely cruelty-free.  A fact that hasn't harmed the bag's wildly popular success. Indeed, on a recent jaunt along the Champs Elysées, in Lancel's flagship shop, the BB Bag in Beige is to be had only by special order!

A Rose Is A Rose—Except When It’s An Eco-Beauty Powerhouse

 By Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff
Editor, Eco-Stiletto  www.EcoStiletto.com

Why roses? Serious results, in the form of cell regeneration and uber-hydration, mean these pretty flowers go much further than scent!

http://www.ecostiletto.com/images/uploads/organic-beauty-roses-woman-250x150.jpg

Go ahead and breathe deep—smell that? That’s the scent of spring roses. From now through early autumn in most parts of the country, everyone’s favorite flower is gonna be gettin’ its bloom on. But you, lucky ecoista, can enjoy its botanical beauty benefits all year long with these rose-based, eco-beauty essentials, which are free of parabens, petrochems, synthetic perfumes and animal testing—pretty much any baddie on our Big List.

Why roses? Serious results, in the form of cell regeneration and uber-hydration, from rosehip oil (rosehip is the pomaceous fruit of the rose plant—otherwise known as that bulb-y thing on your rosebush that looks like a weird tomato), which contains linoleic and linolenic essential fatty acids, as well as high concentrations of vitamin A, to treat eczema, acne scars, sun-damaged or mature skin.

Along with the astringent, bactericidal and—dare we say—aphrodisiac properties of rose petals distilled to create rose water and rose essential oil, these pretty flowers go so much further than scent. (But that’s nice, too.)

Ever since we popped a bar of Wembé White Rose Cleansing Blend into the shower, we lather up with a sense of connection to the natural world. Which is exactly what Wembé intends when it creates fair-trade, natural body products from Amazonian botanical elements. Speckled with rose petals and beautiful colored using organic vegetable dyes, this Paraguayan-made, vegan cleansing bar is luxurious and effective enough to use for daily bathing, and pretty enough that you’ll think twice about using it as, well, soap.

Yes, we love our essential oils, but there is something to be said for serious perfume. Composed of ridiculously high-quality, certified organic, wild-crafted, biodynamic and hydro-distilled essences, in complex arrangements orchestrated by master perfumer Alexandra Balahoutis, Strange Invisible Perfumes never disappoint. Their Aquarian Roses perfume smells like roses, certainly, but it’s richer and deeper than that. This mutilayered scent lasts throughout the day, leaving you with little whiffs of deliciously beautiful fragrance that evolves as it warms and softens. Captivating.

Do you want what she’s having? Celebs love CARE by Stella McCartney 5 Benefits Moisturizing Fluid—for good reason: It’s light, lovely to smell and packs a moisturizing and nourishing punch with grape seed oil, white mallow extract, green tea extract and rose oil. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that it was created by the green queen herself.

Living Nature’s Radiance Night Oil delivers targeted results with organic rosehip fruit oil, organic jojoba oil and highly prized Damascus rose flower oil. Before crawling under the covers, dab this beautifully scented oil on trouble spots—under eyes, around the mouth, on the neck. While you’re getting your zzz’s, Radiance is hard at work hydrating and repairing cells for a firmer, dewier look when you wake. Talk about beauty sleep!
