I was thrilled to be included with a list of dedicated lawmakers and public servants who were honored recently by the nonprofit Environmental Working Group with their 2010 Environmental Champions Award. My Chief of Staff, Liz Fenton, accepted the award for me. Other honorees included Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), Senator Ellen Corbett (D-San Leandro), Assemblywoman Julia Brownley (D-Santa Monica), Lt. Governor – elect/outgoing San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and Debbie Raphael with the San Francisco Dept. of the Environment.

The following is from EWG:

Senator Fran Pavley While serving in the State Assembly, Pavley authored two landmark laws to combat climate change by limiting greenhouse gas emissions in California. In 2010, Pavley authored legislation that would have banned BPA in baby bottle, sippy cups, and food and formula containers. The bill failed on the Senate Floor in the last hours of the 2-year session after the chemical industry spent nearly $5 million on lobbyists. Also in 2010, Senator Pavley authored a bill which would ban the heavy metal cadmium in children's jewelry. This bill passed both houses and was signed by the Governor.

"While the commitment to public health and the environment may not be on the front burner in Washington these days, tonight's recipients are proof they are in California," said EWG president Ken Cook. "Taking on the chemical companies, bottled water makers and the wireless industry has proven to be a tough fight, but ones these folks aren't afraid to take on in the name of California's families."

We're almost there! Just one week from today, with your help, "The Story of Cosmetics", a short film about toxic chemicals in cosmetics, will be released around the world. Watch the trailer now:

We've partnered with Annie Leonard and Free Range Studios - the creators of "The Story of Stuff " - to release this 7-minute movie online on July 21, just in time to help build momentum for the introduction of groundbreaking safe cosmetics legislation in Congress.

We have the opportunity to reach millions of people around the world with "The Story of Cosmetics", creating a wave of support for an effective, common-sense law that will ensure all cosmetics and personal care products are safe.

Earlier this month we asked you to help launch this film - and we've been blown away by your response so far.

THANK YOU to everyone who has already who's already donated and offered to spread the film far and wide! Because of you, we're almost halfway to our goal of raising the money we need to put the finishing touches on the movie and create opportunities for viewers to turn their learning into action. But we're not there yet!

In the past six years, with your help, we've educated millions of people around the world about the problem of harmful chemicals in products like lipstick, cologne, soaps and even baby shampoos - and together we're shifting the market toward healthier alternatives.

Now, for the first time in 70 years, we have a real chance at national legislation that would eliminate chemicals linked to cancer and birth defects from the products women, men and children put on their bodies every day.

Thank you for everything you're already doing to give the beauty industry a makeover. Stay tuned!

My Daughter Went to A Birthday Party and All She Got Was A Bottle of Poison

By Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff

Rachel is Founder of  mommygreenest.com

My eight-year-old daughter went to a birthday party recently and came home with a bag full of goodies inspired by the  “spa day” theme. Now, most moms might see a little bag full of lipgloss and bubble bath and thank their lucky stars their daughters grew out of the Webkins phase. To me, finding a bag full of tween beauty products in my daughter’s overnight bag is like discovering she’d brought home a stash of poison.

Because that’s what they are, these beauty products designed to capture a tweenager’s heart by convincing her that using them is a first step towards womanhood.

Poison.

Don’t just take my word for it. Take a look at a recent study by the Environmental Working Group and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. They analyzed 17 of the market’s most popular perfumes—from Chanel’s Coco to Bath & Body Works’ Japanese Cherry Blossom—and found that they contain, on average, 14 hazardous chemicals that aren’t listed on their labels. According to the EWG, these chemicals can cause allergic reactions, reproductive damage and hormone disruption.

Believe you me, hormones are not something you want to disrupt in a teenage girl.
