Patyka, What It Means To Feel Beautiful

By Paige Donner

Patyka is a Parisienne beauty care brand that is not just delicious for what is between the covers, but also has put much care into its packaging as well. Unwrapping the Absolis Patyka Neroli Brightening body lotion is like unwrapping origami.
Not only do you find the treasure of the smooth-smelling EcoCert, CosmeBio, Leaping Bunny certified lotion inside the package, you are also welcomed with a message announcing that you have just unwrapped a "tree-free" box that is made from sugar cane residue, flax and hemp. Their philosophy?
Because nothing is lost and everything is transformed. - Patyka

But back to the EcoBeauty products themselves that Patyka calls "beauté remarquable" a phrase they've trademarked.

It translates to "Remarkable Beauty" and is encapsulated by not just an ingredients list but also a philosophy that emphasizes every bit a woman's feelings of inner beauty. The Patyka manifesto:
My beauty is a work of art...My well being stems from an approach that rids me of any complexes and respects me and my environment...Modern, responsible, active and demanding - my beauty bears testimony to the fact that an effective and intelligent cosmetic solution exists...
Each product, as well as their line of perfumes, is carefully crafted and blended with an apothecarist's wisdom.  Case in point: Neroli body lotion is a blend of Neroli and Sesame: Neroli soothes, tones and restores elasticity and is tolerated by most skin types. Sesame is rich in Omega 3 and 6. Sesame oil is easily absorbed by the skin and takes with it all of the active properties of the substances it is blended with. It also restructures the skin tissue.

NoPeg Natural Beauty Care Shop, 75002 Paris

You can find Patyka products at NoPeg in Paris, a delightful natural beauty products shop that also offers day spa pampering such as foot massages and facials.

You can also find the line at Le Bon Marche and Printemps in Paris, and in the States it is available at newlondonpharmacy.com and spiritbeautylounge.com where they offer a full range of products.

Saw Palmetto and Mint from Origins

As we fast approach turning back the clocks and Halloween weekend, it is with a touch of sadness that we say Adieu to summer...One thing we won't be leaving behind, however, is our Origins Zero Oil™ Beauty Regimen. We discovered it this past summer and have since made it one of our essentials. Here's why:

The NEW Zero Oil™ Collection with Saw Palmetto and Mint features a cleanser, toner, moisturizer and instant matte that, when used as a regimen, are clinically proven to immediately unclog pores while also providing skin with clarity and moisture.

In fact, after four weeks, the NEW Zero Oil™ Collection is clinically proven to reduce oil and the appearance of pore size and improve smoothness and tone.

We at Greening Beauty put this to the test during the "dog days" of summer August and September when temperatures were hottest. We say It worked!

Origins, as many of us devotees of natural skincare know, has been part of the very large Estee Lauder cosmetics company since 1990. As an integral part of that larger corporate structure, it is well worth acknowledging that Origins uses potent plants, organic ingredients, and 100% natural essential oils. Origins has a long-standing commitment to protect the planet, its resources and all those who populate it which is reaffirmed by the earth and their animal friendly practices, packaging and policies.

Here are some of the collections key ingredients:

Saw Palmetto Indigenous to the southeastern United States, the berries of this green, leafy plant have been used by Florida’s Seminole Indians as a source of both food and medicine.

Broad Leaf Kelp (Laminaria Saccharina) Native to the shores of Britain and Ireland, this seaweed is known as a “Jack of all trades” due to its various benefits including reducing excess oil production in skin.

Salicylic Acid Salicylic Acid is often used as an exfoliating ingredient within skin care products.

ESSENTIAL OILSSpearmint Native to Asia, the stems and essential oil are used in folk remedies to help stimulate mental alertness.

Lemon Used primarily for its purifying properties.

Sweet Orange Derived from fruits of the Citrus Sinensis tree, the aroma is known for its mood-lifting properties.

Lavender An herb used for over 2,500 years, Lavender is widely known for its soothing and anti-irritant qualities.

Ylang Ylang Has long been used as a purifier.

Special Recommend:  Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Mushroom Skin Relief. Makes the red disappear. Very useful as we fold into Fall and get ourselves ready for truffle season!

W.I.N. In A Pomegranate World

By Paige Donner
Kristin Engvig, W.I.N. Conference Founder
"Nobody is a nobody," this is one of the nuggets of advice that Kristin Engvig imparted to her guests and attendees at the recent W.I.N., Women's International Networking, conference that took place in Paris the first week of October.
A conference already in its 13th year, Founder Kristin Engvig, a resident of Switzerland, has built her success upon the foundational principles such as compassion, caring, commitment and the ability to listen to one another, regardless of gender.
"We have the responsibility to really listen to each other. And when we're listened to, we become more responsible," said Engvig, during a recent interview. "I have discovered that when we are listened to, we become more careful of what we say. It's also a matter of creating an environment we feel safe in, where people feel OK to be themselves.  To be listened to is an incredibly empowering experience," shared Engvig.

W.I.N. Conference Founder, Center, and Team.
This environment of caring and sharing of global and authentic, is precisely what speakers and participants experienced at W.I.N. over the course of three days this October in Paris.
To help center and focus the 800 attendees, the morning plenary sessions began with piano recitals such as a musical selection from Chopin. The music set the tone for both calm serenity and focused attentiveness. And then the speakers let forth...
Women Are A Global Massive Business Opportunity
Speaker Avivah Wittenberg used an anecdote that resonated with all attendees: She asked how many guests carried a handbag or a purse? Every female hand in the audience went up. She then asked How many women drive cars? Approximately 90% of hands went up. She then asked, How many women drive a car that is designed with a space specifically to store a handbag? Not one hand was raised.
"We are not a minority. We are not a diversity. We are a huge, massive global business opportunity," she said. The current global purchasing power of women is $1.3 trillion, a figure that is more than India and China combined.
WWW = Web, Women, Weather
Conference speakers were asked to address the attendees on the three W's of the 21st century: Web, women and weather, otherwise known as tenchnology, women and climate change.
Roberta Coceo of Microsoft, Italy pointed out that there is a proven correlation between women's participation in the economy and workforce and a country's GDP. There is also a proven positive correlation between childbearing and countries where women are significantly engaged in the workforce.

Listening is Key to W.I.N.
Women And Climate Change
Royal Dutch Shell's V.P.  of Strategy, Dick Benschop noted that what keeps executives up at night is the need to attract and retain top talent, regardless of gender.  He noted that at shell, "diversity" means all the ways they are different, whether that's age, gender or ethnicity.
On renewables, he said, "If there's going to be an energy revolution, it should start on the demand side because on the supply side it will take more time to build or re-build the infrastructure. History has shown us that it takes about 30 years for new energy sources to become even 1% of the world's energy source."
The Gulf Oil Tragedy is a nightmare he brought up in his speech stating that the industry has a "moral obligation" to learn from it. In order to do this, "We need to attract the best minds and talent. We will continue to attract the best and most innovative women and men."

A Pomegranate World
Engvig, mother of a 9-year-old who herself lived 12 years in Italy before settling in Switzerland, noted that there is something "Really Big" happening  with women right now. There is a focus on the well-being of women. "As we listen behind the headlines and statistics about depressed, overworked and stressed women in the West or poor women in Africa, we know, deep in our hearts, that there is a human being, a unique individual behind each story, with hopes, dreams and destinies."
There are also issues that are endemic to women globally as well as regional issues such as water and hygiene in developing countries or maternity leave in N. America, or gender gaps in the workforce in Europe. For example, the World Economic Forum recently rated Italy number 72 in terms of gender gap.

Many of the conference attendees and speakers spoke of the shift from a pyramid world, where structures are top-down and hierarchical, to a pomegranate world, where the landscape is diversified, dispersed, organic.  The pomegranate landscape, coupled with this massive arrival of women into economic roles, has never been seen before in the history of the world. Reflecting on this, I think I'll take a(nother) piece of wisdom from Engvig, "Expect magic to happen!"

Hollywood's Green Moguls Take Home Top Awards

The green carpet rolled out for The Environmental Media Association's EMA Awards this Saturday at the Warner Bros. movie lot, which was hosted by Olivia Munn and Jason Ritter. The event, which was completely plastic water bottle free, honored environmental films and television series, tackled topics such as alternative fuel sources and even featured a live Native American Dance troupe.

Celebrity guests included the brilliant James Cameron and his beautiful and green conscious wife, Suzy Amis Cameron (famous for her own green fashion choices). They were both on hand when Avatar snagged the night's award for Feature Film. On the green carpet, Cameron explained the significance of how his film was shot and its overall environmental impact.

"Let's look at the big picture," he said. "Avatar was a film that took place in an enormous rain forest. Can't shoot big battle scenes in a rain forest. It was 100 percent CGI. There were a few people playing multiple roles so the footprint compared to the visual impact was very tiny. But ultimately it's a multi-hundred million dollar movie, there are a lot of people working on computers, and those computers are absorbing energy. There's no way you can say this movie was made with one watt of power. But you have to weigh the value of the film with the environmental impact in the public consciousness." - James Cameron,  on making Avatar

Other stars gave us the scoop on how their television sets are enviro-friendly and waste-free. Sarah Drew from Grey's Anatomy took tips from a fellow star on the set: "I was very inspired by Sandra Oh, because she never uses paper products on set," she told us on the red carpet. "She uses her own mugs that say "Oh" on it, and she has her own plates. I went out and bought a reusable mug that looks like one of those coffee cups. I also bring my water bottle to set every day."

Katrina Bowden took us inside 30 Rock's very serious green policies;  "Our show is green, we have done away with all plastic bottles," she said. "At the beginning of the season we get our own mugs with our names on it, there's recycling bins everywhere, efficient light bulbs everywhere. The same thing I am doing at home too."

Mark Paul Gosselaar, on the other hand, told us it hasn't always been easy to keep a set's waste and energy consumption down, but that now being green on set is the norm. "So much so that when they gave my character a car, I asked that they made it a Prius" he told us about his time on 'Raising the Bar'. "They said "we'll get you a Prius!" but I don't think that would have happened years ago."

But if a film or TV series still finds it difficult to keep their carbon footprint in check, they might want to follow green guru Ed Begley Jr.'s guidance. "Contact EMA and get that green checklist for production," he told us. "It's simple things like recycling on the set, not printing scripts - if you have to print them, do so on recycled paper. Use pdf files. As an actor, I like to use pdfs. Shuttling people around, get a low mileage vehicle and more fuel efficient shuttles, buy green energy, have efficient lighting in the production office. Really it's as easy as checking out the EMA list."

In addition to "Avatar," "30 Rock," the documentary "Gasland" and Begley's "Living With Ed" took home top honors of the night.

'Tis The Season of Pink

(From our friends at Safe Cosmetics.org)

This October, ask Estee Lauder to help prevent breast cancer

It’s October, which means autumn colors are arriving – especially the color pink, which is now synonymous with "breast cancer awareness."

Estee Lauder trumpets its commitment to breast cancer awareness through promotions and pink ribbons galore. Awareness about early detection and treatment options is important. But when one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, what we need most of all is to get chemicals linked to cancer out of products we use every day – including cosmetics from pink ribbon companies like Estee Lauder.

Some examples: Estee Lauder brands Bumble & Bumble, Aveda and Clinique contain chemicals that are likely to be contaminated with the carcinogens 1,4-dioxane or formaldehyde; Bobbi Brown Blush contains silica and titanium dioxide (which poses a risk of cancer from inhalation); and several Estee-owned brands still use parabens, which can act like estrogen in the body. Higher estrogen exposures throughout a woman's life can increase her risk of breast cancer, according to the latest scientific evidence.

Check out Evelyn Lauder's Huffington Post piece on breast cancer awareness, and post a comment telling her what you think! Then, learn which cosmetics chemicals are linked to breast cancerand how the pink ribbon came about.

It isn't just the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics talking about these crucial links. The President’s Cancer Panel concluded in its May 2010 report that many cancers are linked to environmental exposures. The Panel pointed to lax regulations around toxic chemicals, the fact that chemicals are allowed on the market without adequate safety data, and the (completely legal) use of known carcinogens and hormone disruptors in common products like cosmetics.

We know that Estee Lauder can make safer cosmetic products, free of ingredients linked to cancer. In fact, their Origins and Aveda brands have phased out some hazardous ingredients, but other Estee Lauder brands like M.A.C., Clinique and Bumble and Bumble have not.

Estee Lauder even lobbied against legislation in California that requires cosmetics companies to notify the state when they use chemicals linked to cancer and birth defects — while simultaneously launching Pink Ribbon campaigns to "raise awareness" about breast cancer.

In the absence of laws that protect us, we have to demand protection ourselves. This October, we want Estee Lauder to made a genuine commitment to women's health.

Mia, Stacy, Lisa, Marisa, Genevieve and all of us at the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics

Africa Rising

By Paige Donner
The new mood in Africa is positive," - Bono

Africa Rising is the contemporary African Art exhibit that opened in Paris on October 6th, the last day of Paris Fashion week.  It is the love-child of Ali Hewson and husband Bono who have directed the world's focus towards the living conditions of the peoples of Africa for decades. This time, they want the focus to be on all the positive things happening on the continent.

Joining Ali and Bono in their efforts this year is the French Luxury Brand LVMH. Louis Vuitton, a company recognized for its support of the arts and its Core Values program, collaborated with designer Ali Hewson to manufacture a signature bag, the Edun bag, named after her line of designer clothing. It is the first time LV  has manufactured anything 100% in Africa, in this instance, Kenya.
Founder of Edun, Ali Hewson stated that it's great to be partnered with a luxury worldwide recognized brand such as Louis Vuitton, because "you are stronger as a team."
That a contemporary art exhibit dominated the social scene of Paris Fashion Week is both fitting and triumphant. It probably helped the cause just a little bit that rockstars such as Angelique Kidjo and - of course - Bono, took the stage to perform for the select crowd in support of the cause.

Alexandra Richards, daughter of Keith, provided DJ tunes. But the real stars of the show were the contemporary artists and their artwork.

Dita Von Teese "Closet Environmentalist" Ignites Paris Fashion Week

By Paige Donner

Dita Wowed during Paris Fashion Week, stealing the show confessed designers and paparazzi alike.  She's a self-described "closet environmentalist," often preferring vintage over new.  Maybe that's why she sat front row at Elie Saab's collection shown in the Tuileries on Wednesday?  Ahh...that nostalgia for 70's ultra-feminine fashion...
Pictured Below: Dita Von Teese front-row at Elie Saab SS11, October 6, Paris Fashion Week.

Elie Saab's Delight In The 70's

By Paige Donner

Elie Saab's Paris Spring Summer '11 collection shown today in the Jardin des Tuileries is what the designer is calling his "70's Delight." The line of soft neutrals is a color palette the designer was inspired to draw on from his boyhood memories of glamorous women from the 70s. "I remember women wearing these colors. They are colors more refined, light, powdery." Nude, sable, salmon, silver, stone gray, slate - this is the palette of Saab's Spring Summer collection this year.

Saab's Spring Summer show today floated you onto a boat moored in St. Tropez Bay where nude-backed women glide along yacht decks delicately draped and exposed in flowing, wispy trains of long salmon-colored georgette dresses and whispering silver chiffon tunics.

"I wanted to work with a different style of woman for this collection; A woman who works at home, a woman who vacations on a yacht, a woman who attends evening soirees. I didn't want to use too many muses this time," confided Saab after the show.

Accessories made a big debut on the Elie Saab Paris fashion runway today. Navel-reaching gold chains dangling heavy pendants decorated the occasional plunging neckline. Gold cuffs worn on both wrists provided just the accent for the sable, salmon and smoky white one-piece jumpsuits, shorts suits and floor-length gowns.

"Accessories are a big development for the house," commented Saab. "We emphasized our accessories this year in the line for that reason." Salmon-suede clutch trimmed with metal and a jewel of a bag covered in crystals, also textured with tone-on-tone stone gray leather interlacing could be seen being coveted by the catwalking and stunning models with free-flowing coiffed hair.

When asked which celebrities would wear his creations best this year, he responded, "Any who like the line." Dita Von Teese, a self-described "closet environmentalist" sat in the front row. The line for this season is ultra-feminine and looks like it would feel delightful to wear and to walk in. The ultra-petite and feminine Von Teese could easily strap on a pair of the chunky-heeled suede matching sandals and sway down the length of a yacht and into an all-night soiree.

The collection's colors evoke the exuberance of Bahia. The designs evoke the Rockstar era of 70s St. Tropez Jagger excess.  Music for the show was by Michel Gaubert who played Rolling Stone's "Emotional Rescue" and such 70s era classics. Hair by Orlando Pita and team; Makeup by Tom Pecheux and team using MAC Pro.

Fashion Forward - Mode A Paris

By Paige Donner

The designers this season are taking their lines forward. Fashion Forward is what we're seeing on the runways, backstage, on the streets and in the showrooms.

Fashion Forward - Paris Fashion Week 2010 for Spring Summer '11

From Galliano's Polynesian Sailor-on-shore-leave motif for Dior to John Paul Gaultier's flagrant use of 3-D glasses - for his runway show! - which consisted of every inch the three-dimensional plus-sized models in Joan Jett wigs. Beth Ditto, pouring out of her rosette-trimmed teddy for his finale stole the show.

Givenchy Goes Animal. Photo by Monica Feudi/ GoRunway.com

Givenchy went animal on us.  Raw and untamed, Riccardo Tisci delivered his models to pulsing Techno at the Lyceé Carnot.  Zippers snaked up side seams and flashes of metal punctuated the models' catwalk.
Eco-Alert: One lone Eco Taxi was spotted outside the Givenchy venue dropping off guests. Guests were holding letter-sized animal-print invitations printed on colored paper.
Change channels to Stella's show where only Vegans need apply. Lemons and grapefruit  spilled out everywhere. Glee actress 24-year-old Lea Michele, this month's Glamour Cover Girl, said it was the only show this fur-free animal lover was taking in on her first Paris Fashion season.

Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington sat up front row at Chloe and took notice of MacGibbons SS11 line. Photo by Giovanni Giannoni.

MORE CHLOÉ PHOTOS ON WWD.com
Chloé was all grown up and elegant...as usual. There's a reason why Jackie Kennedy, Grace Kelly and Brigitte Bardot have all worn Chloé. In a word, elegant.
Chloé delivered again today. The runway show was held at the Espace Ephémère in the Jardin des Tuileries, and though it started 45 minutes late, designer Hannah MacGibbon delivered to reggae-rasta-rap beats with Anna Wintour in her front row.  In a show of bright whites and nude beiges, the model wearing only a silk sheer blouse raised nary an eyebrow, though Grace Coddington, seated next to Wintour, seemed to take notice.
Somehow it doesn't surprise that Stella McCartney was at Chloé before she launched her own house.  On my way out, coming face to face with Anna Wintour gave me a jolt of thrills I hadn't expected. Is it from knowing that the woman commands a part of the billion dollar fashion industry?  Of course, only afterwards I realized I should have asked her what she thought of Eco Fashion. It's not very often this reporter is caught up in the excitement of a passing moment. Chloé had a packed house and a front row of editors, in addition to Wintour. Though it seemed that the focus of the show was also a bit of a perfume launch.

New Perfume. Commercial directed by Roman Coppola.

And to round this up for October 4th with only two more days of Fashion Week left, Mary-Kate and Ashley showed their new line The Row, by appointment in a lovely salon boasting a boiserie and soaring white ceilings. Elegant suits, freely-flowing bias-cut dresses all in silk satin back crepe. They kept their 15 outfits tight and to a palette of black, pale pink and ivory. That they weren't quite ready for N.Y. served them well. Where better than Paris to show your Spring Summer '11 line the first time?! Photos are now up on Bing.com.

Great To Be The Next Big Thing

It's hard to believe that Fashion Greats such as Dior, Givenchy, Chanel were ever once teenagers with a dream.  But as with all of us, we started somewhere.

Paris is the birthplace of fashion and during this Spring Summer '11 Fashion Week season the strength of that tradition is seen all around the city, with brilliant shows being staged in the Tuileries, the Grand Palais, reclaimed convents as well as on rooftops and in basements.

Pedro Laurenco, 19 Year Old Brazilian Designer. Photo courtesy Vogue Talents.

The Pedro Laurenço show took place on the Quai Malaquais in the Salle Melpomène whose ceilings are at least 10 meters high and where the convex upper arches are adorned with French National Heritage paintings.

It's always fun to be where The Next Big Thing is happening. Greening Hollywood was there twice this past week at the start of Paris Fashion Week and we weren't alone...Vogue editors, notably the team from Milan were also there. Vogue Italian Editor Franca Sozzani is on a mission to support new and young designers and she has staffed her ranks with writers and editors who are fanned out across the city en force on this same mission.

Pedro Laurenço

The vibe at this show was so Brazilian, relaxed, genial. As the famous models pulled up in their taxis and chauffeured vehicles to make it to the show's hour-delayed start-time, the crowd was full of kisses and Portuguese greetings.

Hairstylist Guido Pila - for Redken - pulled up on a chauffeured motorcycle,www.win-win.com, one of the most brilliant urban transport systems I've seen in Paris. His driver stripped him of his helmet and motorcycle jacket as he dropped him off. [*Note this is the only Eco aspect of the show I've been able to discover byprint time.]

Nineteen-year-old Pedro's father, Reinaldo, also a famous Brazilian fashion designer, greeted guests personally as they arrived.  Pedro who debuted for the first time in Paris only just earlier this year, is already pulling the stylemakers to his front row seatings and on only just the third day of the Paris Shows.

Pedro Laurenco Paris Spring Summer '11. Photo courtesy Vogue, Talents. Go to Vogue.it for complete photos of October 1st Paris Show.

For Complete Pedro Laurenco SS11 Show Photos, go to Vogue.it/Talents

His geometric cuts, his bold colors were blended with panels of nude netting - an effect that created the illusion that the haute couture designs floated along the runway accompanied by the models.

Models' makeup was "Asian influenced," according to makeup artist Mai Lee, first assistant to head makeup designer, Diane Kendal (for MAC).  Faces were nude with bright pink eyeshadow as color accent. Hair was pulled back severely and all models were blond.

Whether your parents are famous or not, you still have to have talent to make it in any business. Margarita, Missoni's daughter, was also in the front row of Pedro's show. She was seated next to Vogue New York's fashion features editor.  A young designer I was speaking with while the show was getting prepped, told me how maybe if she could get the chance to work with one of these designers, it might help her get her break in the business. In the meantime she'll be dressing the Chanel and Jean Paul Gaultier shows during this Paris Fashion Week Spring Summer 2011.  Noting all the editors and Vogue writers in the audience of this second showing of a 19 year-old designer, it makes me believe that a teenage dream can, and does, come true.

Andrea Crews : Fashion, ART, Activism

When your world is not exclusively fashion, face it, a debut Parisian Runway Fashion Show is a daunting prospect.  Just trying to figure out what shoes to wear to something like this can be nearly paralyzing!

So showing up to Andrea Crews' show in a sketchy part of the edgy-chic Bastille district, left me completely unprepared for what to expect.

What designer Maroussia Rebecq, who leads the Andrea Crews collective, delivered was every bit her folksy, French countryside, friends-on-a-picnic atmosphere that she strived for.

The runway show itself took place in an empty basement apartment where the floor was pasted with cardboard boxes, taped with brown packing tape.  The show started when her friend, a bearded folksinger, took the stage and started strumming his acoustic guitar.

Crews uses recycled pieces of vintage clothing for some of her creations. This collection's theme was corn and bread. Fresh fruits and baskets of dried fruits were used to decorate the runway stage. Loaves of bread were used to decorate the models' hair and used as pieces of jewelry hanging from the models' necks.

Crews used open casting, so her models ranged from the size of a 12 year old boy to that of a mature and very saftig woman. If it's true that a designer is measured by her street cred, then Crews is definitely Parisian Street Legit. The audience was rastas, artists, fashionistas, international photographers... Both N.Y.
English and Parisian French could be heard throughout the crowd as we all jammed together on the floor seating to watch the denim, lace, t-shirt and corn-printed cotton presentation.

When I asked,  Rebecq responded that her motive for choosing bread and corn as motifs were French countryside, religious values, family and friends.

After the show, bottles of red wine were passed around and glasses filled while everyone dove into the platters of fruit and cheese.
