My Daughter Went to A Birthday Party and All She Got Was A Bottle of Poison

By Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff

Rachel is Founder of  mommygreenest.com

My eight-year-old daughter went to a birthday party recently and came home with a bag full of goodies inspired by the  “spa day” theme. Now, most moms might see a little bag full of lipgloss and bubble bath and thank their lucky stars their daughters grew out of the Webkins phase. To me, finding a bag full of tween beauty products in my daughter’s overnight bag is like discovering she’d brought home a stash of poison.

Because that’s what they are, these beauty products designed to capture a tweenager’s heart by convincing her that using them is a first step towards womanhood.

Poison.

Don’t just take my word for it. Take a look at a recent study by the Environmental Working Group and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. They analyzed 17 of the market’s most popular perfumes—from Chanel’s Coco to Bath & Body Works’ Japanese Cherry Blossom—and found that they contain, on average, 14 hazardous chemicals that aren’t listed on their labels. According to the EWG, these chemicals can cause allergic reactions, reproductive damage and hormone disruption.

Believe you me, hormones are not something you want to disrupt in a teenage girl.

My Greatest Hope...

By Leilani Munter

[Leilani, "Carbon Free Girl," is a Race Car Driver who competes at NASCAR]

After spending a week in Venice, Louisiana getting an up close view of the
BP gulf coast oil spill disaster, talking with locals whose livelihoods
are over, and seeing dead wildlife, I am trying my best to look at the
positive side. Keep in mind that I just got off the phone with one of my
boat captains in Louisiana and he told me he saw six dead dolphins and ten
dead turtles in the past few days. So the idea of looking on "the bright
side" is nearly impossible, and most days I fail, but I think it is human
nature to try to find something positive in the face of a catastrophe. The
only positive thing that can possibly come from this -- the largest
environmental disaster in American history -- is if it causes us to change
the way we are living on this Earth.

When Dale Earnhardt Sr. died on the last lap of the Daytona 500 in 2001,
it devastated NASCAR. He was their biggest star and a hero to most of
their audience. The one positive thing that came from his death is that
racing took a good hard look at safety and they made some really big
changes. After his death, all drivers were required to wear full face
helmets (Earnhardt wore an open face helmet) as well as a HANS device, a
head and neck restraint system. SAFER barriers, or soft walls, were
installed in the speedways so that when we crashed, the racetrack wall
would help absorb some of the impact. It cost millions of dollars, but it
has also likely saved many lives. I have since had wrecks at nearly 200
mph (one impact was so intense it put a crack through my motor) and I have
walked away with nothing but bruises and a sore back. I don't know for
sure that I would have walked away from those crashes if many years
earlier, Earnhardt hadn't passed away and changed the safety rules of
racing. His death marked a permanent change to the way motor sports safety
was conducted, NASCAR drew a line in the sand and never looked back. That
fateful moment made racing safer for all drivers that have strapped
themselves into a race car since, including myself.

Perhaps one day we will look back at this oil spill and think "If the Gulf
Coast oil spill hadn't happened, we wouldn't have kick started our clean
energy economy back in 2010. We wouldn't have made such great strides with
solar pv and thermal technology, geothermal energy, wind and tidal
turbines, green buildings, hydrogen fuel cell and electric cars,
alternative fuels like cellulosic ethanol and algae based biodiesel, and
we might not have passed the American Power Act." Perhaps we would look
back and incredulously say "Imagine if the gulf coast oil spill hadn't
happened, we might actually still be running our country on dirty fossil
fuels and spending billions of dollars buying oil from foreign countries!
Wouldn't that be awful?!"

Charles Darwin once said, "It is not the strongest of the species that
survives. Nor is it the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that
is most adaptable to change."

And so our time has come -- this is the 11th hour. We either change the
way we are living on the planet or relegate ourselves to eventually having
our planet covered with oily water, polluted air, dead coral reefs, and
cattle pastures where there were once rain forests. I hope that this
disaster will wake us up and make those in charge realize that now is the
time for us to turn over a new leaf. To check ourselves into rehab to get
off our addiction to fossil fuels and start a new sober life with clean,
renewable energy.

I am a race car driver; my career is currently based around an internal
combustion engine
, and yet even I can see the importance of energy
independence
and the move towards the use of clean, renewable energy. We
are at a crossroads and I hope we take the right turn -- or maybe it's a
left? Let's take a step -- or even better, a leap -- in the right
direction. Let's pass the American Power Act and start putting a real
effort into capturing clean energy from the wind, the sun, and the ocean.
Let's put Americans to work building our new green energy economy. We've
been talking about it for years, the technology is already here -- all we
have to do now is to make it happen.

What in the world are we waiting for? Millions of gallons of oil to spill
into the Gulf of Mexico?

My greatest hope in the wake of this ongoing tragedy is that this is our
clean energy wake up call. My biggest fear? That we won't answer.

Sex And The City 2 Turns Up The Fun, but it's a green "miss"

By Ann Murray

[Ann is a Hollywood entertainment reporter who currently works in-house at a Major Movie Studio]

The Sexy and successful green ladies of Los Angeles were out in full force on Friday night to celebrate the opening of ‘Sex and the City 2’ at the beautiful Shangri-la hotel in Santa Monica, sponsored by The Party Goddess.

Sexy In Abu Dhabi, Sex And The City 2

The event began with a pool-side rendezvous, where ladies mingled and took in drinks poured out of special edition SATC SKYY Vodka bottles, snapped fun pics at the SATC photo booth, were pampered with massages and gift bags, and signed up for a raffle to win signed Christian Louboutins to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The night was followed by a special screening of the film at the Laemmle 5 theater.

While everyone was excited that carrie bradshaw was back in business and in a beautiful and exotic Abu Abu Dhabi, not everyone at the party agreed that the film was very environmentally friendly.

Natasha told us that she wasn’t so sure Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte needed so many cars during their desert vacation.

In one scene, the ladies are picked up by four – count em’ – four private cars to take them from the airport to their luxurious hotel. “They should have only used one car,” told us Natasha at the afterparty. “I’m not sure that was as efficient or green as it should have been. All four ladies would have fit comfortably in just one car.”

Natasha’s friend Yarad suggested that the amount of food during their Abu Dhabi feast was a bit too out of touch  - particularly during  a scene when the  four ladies sit around a table with enough food fit for fifteen people. “All that food that they had, it was too much for just four women. What about the starving people around the world? or even Down the street from their hotel?” she said, adding “I would feel overwhelmed and maybe embarrassed to have all that food around.”

Was it really that necessary to drive “8 time zones” across the world – as Carrie said - to take in a little luxury? Other guests suggested Carrie and the gang should have stayed at a location closer to home and opted against carbon footprint-heavy jets, like beautiful main or New Hampshire, or even a short romp to Miami.

But there are a few things that save the film’s carbon footprint. In a key scene from the film, Carrie tells a shoe salesman that she doesn’t need a plastic bag for her new pair of incredibly inexpensive shoes, as she stuffs them in her purse.

At the afterparty, Jennifer agreed with this. “That was a great tiny step that Carrie did that makes a huge difference, because plastic bags are incredibly wasteful and take hundreds of years to break down,” she said.

And in the last few scenes of the film – scenes we don’t want to spoil  for you – Carrie and her best girlfriends show that they maybe didn’t need all of that waste after all, because all they ever really needed was back home with their friends and families.

Matcha: Queen of Green Tea

by: Pangea

Green tea has earned critical acclaim as a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that feeds the skin a rich array of vitamins, minerals, proteins, and amino acids. Matcha, the queen of all green teas, offers these amazing features times ten! Why is Matcha so much better than your average green tea?

Because it is made of whole ground tea leaves as opposed to an aqueous infusion (i.e. watered down version) of green tea. Matcha's tannins help build and strengthen collagen, thus firming and toning the skin and significantly improving its elasticity. Matcha's antioxidant components consist of a special group of polyphenols called catechins, which are extraordinarily potent and plentiful. The health benefits of catechins have been studied extensively and have demonstrated far greater antioxidant protection than both vitamins C and E, possibly because of their ability to penetrate cells so effectively. They help protect the skin from UV damage, prevent collagen breakdown, increase immunity, and boost detoxifying enzymes to promote skin clarity and improve its overall health and well-being. Matcha's anti-inflammatory components are found in its caffeine which combines with its polyphenols to deliver bionic beautifying benefits! These anti-inflammatories aid in healing acne, rosacea and eczema; they help reduce redness, puffiness and swelling, and can even help prevent the permanent destruction of tissue, helping to reverse the hands of time. There's a good chance Matcha was Wonder Woman's choice tea. It's ours.
From Vanity Fair's Beauty Blog:
"During the month of May, [Vanity Fair] Beauty brings you our favorite green picks that will keep you pampered from head to toe. [...]

Once a week, we detoxify, cleanse, and exfoliate our skin with Pangea Organics Japanese Matcha Tea with Acai & Goji Berry Facial Mask.
Synergy of Land and Sea. This multi-award-winning mask embodies the essence of our approach to Ecocentric Skincare. Skillfully blended to incorporate a holistic approach to beautiful skin, our mask includes a diversity of sustainable elements. Forest, mountain, desert, and sea-derived botanicals in their bioactive forms provide essential nutrients - all in one fell swoop! Using this mask just once will noticeably improve the quality, tone, and texture of your skin - you'll be amazed at how soft, glowing, and radiant your skin will be.

Pangea's multi-purpose mask relies on nothing but nature to provide you with the best in beauty. Green and white clays work together to help restore, balance, cleanse, and detoxify; four sea vegetables re-mineralize, hydrate, and oxygenate cells; sugarcane serves to exfoliate, unclog pores, and stimulate the production of elastin and collagen; acai and goji berry extracts lend their extraordinary super-powers as antioxidants, functioning as regenerative "food" for the skin; jojoba and sunflower seed oils nourish and moisturize; three teas are employed in both whole leaf and extract forms to ensure maximum potency for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and energizing effects; and a harmonious blend of extremely concentrated herbal extracts and essential oils further nurture the skin and senses.

An Apple A Day Keeps The Scalpel Away

By Paige Donner

This Rare Swiss Apple Fights Signs of Aging, Claims Skin Experts.
Stem cells are all the buzz nowadays. Thankfully, it’s not about slathering embryonic stem cells on skin. "Skincare specialists are not using embryonic stem cells; it is impossible to incorporate live materials into a skincare product," explains Jeanette Jacknin M.D.  The buzz is around plant stem cells protecting the longevity of human stem cells.

Mibelle Biochemistry, a cosmeceutical company, was one of the first on the scene with the award winning PhytoCellTec Malus Domestica. It is based on the callus cells of a rare Swiss apple tree, Uttwiler Spätlauber, known for its fruit’s longevity. When a plant is wounded, the surrounding cells revert back into stem cells, forming callus cells. After the wound has healed, they return to their former state and build new tissue. They are totipotent cells which are known as cells with ‘total potential,’ meaning they can develop into any cell type and have the capacity to form an entire organism. These totipotent plant cells are the technology behind Apple Stem Cells; they stimulate and protect human stem cells while reducing wrinkle depth. They also reportedly have benefits in hair care, preventing hair loss and graying.
http://img03.blogcu.com/v2/images/editor/e/s/e/esenkal/589002578849084_1260391526.jpg
Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body. Unlike embryonic stem cells, adult or multipotent  stem cells are endogenous. They are present within our bodies and serve to maintain and repair the tissues in which they are found. Adult stem cells are found in many organs and tissues, including the skin. In fact, human skin is the largest repository of adult stem cells in the body. Skin stem cells reside in the basal layer of the epidermis where they remain dormant until they are activated by tissue injury or disease, explains Jeanette Jacknin M.D who spoke at 17th World Congress on Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine in Orlando, Florida, April 23-25, 2009
There are several companies with skin serum products out usin this rare Swiss Apple. The Skin Stem Cell Serum for example, (Mallus Domestica) is a liposomal preparation based on the stem cells of that rare Swiss apple. It employs a novel technology enabling the cultivation of a rare and endangered species of apple, the Uttwiler Spatlauber. Thanks to this technology plant stem cells are now able to ensure longevity of skin cells. The skin serum claims to combat chronological aging of the skin.

Apple Stem Cells are one of the first of what is sure to be an onslaught of plant stem cells to emerge in the personal care industry. We already have our eye on up-coming selections. We’ll keep you posted.

Meryl Streep: a True Inspiration

By: Suki Kramer
I recently read an interview with Meryl Streep in Vanity Fair…OMG she is always such an incredible inspiration to me. When I see her give a speech, with that super comfortable, witty, vulnerable, wise presence & the remarkably intelligent, evolved things she always manages to say, she is who I hope to become…& I better get going!
Streep has never gone under the knife & in fact refuses. Someone in the article said what I’ve been saying too, that as you grow older, if you hang on to certain parts of yourself to look younger, you miss out on other stages of life, trying to stop time is detrimental to your emotional growth & a futile way to look at life in general.
Streep says of plastic surgery, “it’s like an interruption in communication with them, like a flag in front of the view & that for an actor, it’s like wearing a veil, it’s not a good thing.”
On the same day I came across an interview with Julia Roberts & hope I don’t someday have to eat my words if I find out she’s ever had plastic surgery or was addicted to the needle…but they asked her some questions I’d like to repeat cause her answer was cool:
they asked, how do you define beauty?
“…to see a person who is present in their joy is the most beautiful thing. I think that’s why our children are all so luminescent – they just exist in the moment of joy.”
Unfortunately, Julia is representing Lancome…so guys, we need to educate her a bit  !
anyway, back to Meryl…
As it said in the article, Streep knows all too well the pressure females feel to dim their light, & it makes me so sad. Seeing young girls play, confident & strong…something happens as they hit puberty, suddenly self-conscious or conscious of what guys think of them. They seem to start to want to do exactly that, dim their light, acquiesce, & reduce themselves (opinions, weight, talent, etc.) & their accomplishments. I think all of us are trying to get “it back” from then on…chasing the light to “find ourselves” again.
As Streep said, “as girls grow up, as soon as boys come into the picture, you figure out that you have to modify that assertiveness thing in order to even be acceptable, let alone appealing, within the cohort of girls as well as boys.” she found enormous relief outgrowing those constraints. The sad realization for me, is that most of us don’t or struggle SO hard day after day. & something she said struck me as something I do personally all the time, accommodate, accommodate, accommodate. I don’t know about you gals.
“I remember Albert Brooks saying to me in Defending Your Life, ‘could you just make it a little sweeter?’ Streep said, “& that’s been repeated by other people in the years since then…but I don’t listen to it.” hmmm at 43, I’m still listening & reacting…
How did Streep free herself? “I think you have to get sick of hearing the accommodation in your approach to things…the way people have to get sick of drinking or drugs before they stop. As there begins to be less time ahead of you, you want to be exactly who you are, without making it easier for everyone else. I’m not sure I ever was really comfortable waning around as a girl, anyway.”
I recently pinned up a picture of Streep at my desk for inspiration.
Best,
Suki

Vitamin C It's Not Just Ascorbic Acid Anymore

By: Suki Kramer

As you know, there’s always a new ingredient being introduced to the market…& right now we’re going to talk about the new antioxidants! Well…OK – they’re not exactly new, but current advances in science are helping good old vitamin C work far better topically & you should know what to look for when choosing skin care products that tout vitamin C as the key ingredient!

Of course you already know that vitamin C is one of the most powerful antioxidants in skin care & an important factor in collagen production. Nothing new. Anti-aging products have been featuring it for years. Bad news is that the topical ester in primitive ascorbic acid form, once exposed to air or light, or simply over time in a formulation, oxidizes, looses electrons & the product becomes unstable & useless.

Scientists in Japan have developed an oil-soluble version of vitamin C ester called tetrahexyldecyl asorbate (BV-OSC). Unlike some the other forms of vitamin C, which are solid at room temperature & harder to emulsify during the formulation period, Tetrahexyldecyl asorbate is a liquid. Along with reducing the browning & oxidization that occurs in the bottle, oil-soluble esters (like ascorbyl palmitate, which has been around for awhile as well) penetrate fat cells instead of water cells. Although the fatty bonds in the tetrahexyldecyl asorbate keep the antioxidant stable in the bottle, they break down faster on the skin. The components are non-acidic too, so they do not irritate the skin! Vitamin C (ascorbyl acid) Glucoside is also a relatively new form of the vitamin & although in powder form, this vitamin has shown remarkable results at the clinical level for everything from wrinkles to brightening the skin! Now, ascorbic acid in liposome or polypeptide form is the only ascorbic acid I would ever let near my skin! Why? Because a liposome or peptide makes the vitamin, the acid, safe, trapped inside a water cell. A formulator can then use a far higher percentage of the vitamin than you ever could if it were on its own. It is then very stable within the product, when exposed to the environment & on your skin! The liposome delivery system is also what really forces the vitamin to penetrate the skin cells.
Because of the stability factor of these new classes of vitamin C, we get far more benefits. We’ll have to wait and see how many more companies keep up with the times & update their formulations to apply all these new vitamin C’s.

I’ll be sure update YOU on new advances science is making in the skin care industry!
know your beauty®,

Suki

A Rose Is A Rose—Except When It’s An Eco-Beauty Powerhouse

 By Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff
Editor, Eco-Stiletto  www.EcoStiletto.com

Why roses? Serious results, in the form of cell regeneration and uber-hydration, mean these pretty flowers go much further than scent!

http://www.ecostiletto.com/images/uploads/organic-beauty-roses-woman-250x150.jpg

Go ahead and breathe deep—smell that? That’s the scent of spring roses. From now through early autumn in most parts of the country, everyone’s favorite flower is gonna be gettin’ its bloom on. But you, lucky ecoista, can enjoy its botanical beauty benefits all year long with these rose-based, eco-beauty essentials, which are free of parabens, petrochems, synthetic perfumes and animal testing—pretty much any baddie on our Big List.

Why roses? Serious results, in the form of cell regeneration and uber-hydration, from rosehip oil (rosehip is the pomaceous fruit of the rose plant—otherwise known as that bulb-y thing on your rosebush that looks like a weird tomato), which contains linoleic and linolenic essential fatty acids, as well as high concentrations of vitamin A, to treat eczema, acne scars, sun-damaged or mature skin.

Along with the astringent, bactericidal and—dare we say—aphrodisiac properties of rose petals distilled to create rose water and rose essential oil, these pretty flowers go so much further than scent. (But that’s nice, too.)

Ever since we popped a bar of WembĂ© White Rose Cleansing Blend into the shower, we lather up with a sense of connection to the natural world. Which is exactly what WembĂ© intends when it creates fair-trade, natural body products from Amazonian botanical elements. Speckled with rose petals and beautiful colored using organic vegetable dyes, this Paraguayan-made, vegan cleansing bar is luxurious and effective enough to use for daily bathing, and pretty enough that you’ll think twice about using it as, well, soap.

Yes, we love our essential oils, but there is something to be said for serious perfume. Composed of ridiculously high-quality, certified organic, wild-crafted, biodynamic and hydro-distilled essences, in complex arrangements orchestrated by master perfumer Alexandra Balahoutis, Strange Invisible Perfumes never disappoint. Their Aquarian Roses perfume smells like roses, certainly, but it’s richer and deeper than that. This mutilayered scent lasts throughout the day, leaving you with little whiffs of deliciously beautiful fragrance that evolves as it warms and softens. Captivating.

Celebs love CARE by Stella McCartney 5 Benefits Moisturizing Fluid—for good reason: It’s light, lovely to smell and packs a moisturizing and nourishing punch with grape seed oil, white mallow extract, green tea extract and rose oil. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that it was created by the green queen herself.

Before crawling under the covers, dab this beautifully scented oil on trouble spots—under eyes, around the mouth, on the neck. While you’re getting your zzz’s, Radiance is hard at work hydrating and repairing cells for a firmer, dewier look when you wake. Talk about beauty sleep!

Greening Beauty: Procter And Gamble Goes On An Un-Diet For A Poisoned Planet

SAN FRANCISCO - Procter & Gamble (P&G, NYSE: PG) will reformulate 18 shampoos in its Herbal Essences line to reduce levels of the cancer-causing chemical 1,4-dioxane, according to a preliminary agreement reached between P&G and David Steinman, founder of the Green Patriot Working Group and author of Diet for a Poisoned Planet. Product tests conducted by Steinman revealed that an Herbal Essences shampoo contained 1,4-dioxane levels of 24 parts per million (ppm).

http://pureintuitiveskincare.com/images/BeautyToDieFor_200.jpgP&G agreed to reformulate after Steinman filed a notice of intent to sue in California under Proposition 65, the state’s landmark toxics law. Prior legal actions filed by the California Attorney General against other companies indicate that the actionable level under Prop. 65 for 1,4-dioxane in personal care products is above 10 ppm.

“We’re glad Procter & Gamble is reducing the levels of carcinogenic contaminants in Herbal Essences,” said Lisa Archer, national coordinator of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics from the Breast Cancer Fund. “It’s a good step, but even more is needed to assure customers that P&G products are free of toxic chemicals.”

1,4-dioxane is considered a probable human carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and a known animal carcinogen by the National Toxicology Program. It is also on California’s Proposition 65 list of chemicals known to cause cancer. The Food and Drug Administration does not require 1,4-dioxane to be listed on labels of personal care products, defining it as a contaminant rather than an ingredient because it is produced during manufacturing.

“Due to inadequate regulations, consumers are in the dark about what’s really in the products they put on their bodies,” Archer said. “We need new laws that require companies to be transparent about the chemicals in their products, and to eliminate hazardous chemicals. Contaminants like 1,4-dioxane are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to problematic chemicals in personal care products.”

At a press conference on Friday, Steinman also released new analysis of 1,4-dioxane in laundry detergents. The highest levels were found in P&G brands, including Tide (55 ppm), Tide Free (29 ppm) and Ivory Snow (31 ppm).

Steinman’s product tests are part of a continuing study that has analyzed more than 150 consumer products for 1,4-dioxane. Many brands have been found to be free of the toxic contaminant.

“Clearly, it’s possible to make great products without 1,4-dioxane,” said Archer. “That’s what all companies should be doing.”

Can I Recycle My Straw? Top 12 Recycling FAQs

Can I Recycle My Straw? Top 12 Recycling FAQs Answered Once And For All

Even the most seasoned ecoista can be stumped by a bottle cap or shampoo bottle. Which bin? Do I need to wash it out? And what about the straw?

by Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff, Founder, Publisher of Eco Stiletto

We all know the drill: Reduce, reuse, recycle. But there may be a bit of confusion on that last part. Even the most seasoned ecoista can be stumped by a bottle cap or a straw. Does it go in the blue bin or the black? If I’m recycling, do I need to wash it first? We’ve got answers to the top 12 questions we get asked on a daily basis. Drumroll, please!

1. What do those arrows and numbers on the bottom of plastic bottles mean?

That’s the “chasing arrow” symbol, and the number in the middle indicates the type of plastic the container is made from. Typically, numbers one and two are the most widely recyclable plastics, but there are exceptions: For example, one through seven are recyclable in the City of Phoenix, but in Scottsdale (a suburb of Phoenix), they only take one (polyethylene terephthalate or PET, used for soda bottles) and two (high-density polyethylene or HDPE, used for milk and detergent bottles). Some recycling programs even take Stryofoam!

2. Why should I wash out my recycling?

First, to remove possible contaminants and second to keep your recycling bin from getting stinky. However, you won’t prevent a can from being recycled if you leave it dirty.

3. Can I recycle small pieces of paper-like facial tissues?

Facial tissue can’t be recycled. The fibers are too weak to be turned into usable paper. And tissue is often contaminated with oils that make them unable to be recycled-the same problem is inherent in trying to recycle paper towels.

4. What about plastic bags?

Plastic bags can be recycled. However, unlike plastic bottles, many curbside programs will not accept plastic bags. Because they’re so light, these bags can get stuck inside machinery during the recycling process. The good news is that many major grocery chains now accept plastic bags and plastic wrap at their stores. Look for special bins outside. Or, better yet, decline the bag and carry a reusable one!

5. Can I recycle small pieces of plastic? What about bottle caps?

Yes, you can recycle small pieces of plastic like bottle tops. Bottle caps are metal, but they’re typically lined with plastic-items made from mixed materials can’t be recycled because the materials can’t be separated. Same thing goes for juice boxes and coated cardboard drink containers-although there are new versions specially marked for recycling or composting, which are indicated on the label.

6. I’m buying a soda. Bottle or can?

Can, definitely. Most cans contain 50% or more recycled aluminum. And a used aluminum can is recycled and back on the grocery shelf as a new can in as little as 60 days.

But wait, there's more! Find out what you can recycle in your bathroom, closet and office at EcoStiletto.com

Pangea And Sephora New BFF's

Sephora Has a Crush on Pangea...
(Ok, Well, Maybe Just on Joshua But We Still Feel the Love!)

by Cheryl Locke

Dreamy do-gooder and Pangea Organics founder Joshua Onysko built his company on social responsibility. It makes us rest easier at night to think that the our fave Japanese Matcha Tea with Acai & Goji Berry Facial Mask was made by content employees receiving living wages.

We called this boy wonder, age 32, out of his garden to discuss everything from his veggie burger of choice (the one at San Francisco's Plant Café) to his company's commitment to women in developing countries.

Pangea Gets Its Good Sense From Nature Picture courtesy USA Today

Beauty and the Blog: Why don't you start by telling us what consumers should know about skincare?

Joshua Onysko: Skin is your largest organ. What you apply to it is an accoutrement to your diet. It's important to feed your skin.bSkincare is no longer about concealing and hiding. It's about establishing a long-term ritual. You can prevent and prolong wrinkles for an extreme amount of time with nourishing ingredients. At Pangea, we take nature and reconstruct it for the skin so that the nutrients are bio-available on a cellular level. We call it alchemy.

BATB: Like witchcraft?
JO: Not quite. Our modern day alchemy takes botanicals, oils, and lipids and reconstructs them for really strong benefits for your skin and results you can see and feel. Take Vitamin C as an example. What a lot of people don't know is that the molecule is too big to penetrate pores. It's not really absorbed into you. Some brands use another version called ascorbic acid, which is chocolate brown, yet they produce creams that are white. That's a dead giveaway. The Pangea solution: Eat an orange.

BATB: Many of us already know your products are non-synthetic but what we don't know is Pangea's philanthropic work.
JO: For the last year, we've been collaborating with Women for Women International, a non-profit organization that helps women survivors of war. We got involved after learning some startling facts. 87% of food is grown by women, which would be fine except for the fact that only 1% of land is owned by women. It's extremely difficult to build the infrastructure. Pangea wanted to help Women for Women [International] rebuild lives through education and job skills training.

BATB: Do you support other organizations?
JO: We pick and choose as we see fit. Fourteen years ago, I was at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where I met Jane Goodall and was blown away by her passion and over 50 years of working with local communities. Her work is not only with primates. We support her Roots & Shoots program, which educates youth on their local ecosystems.

BATB: Your company is just as locally conscious. What's an average day like?
JO: Just yesterday, the seeds for our garden came in the mail. We call them seeds of change and we're going to grow them in our 3000 square feet garden outside the office.

BATB: What's in your garden?
JO: What's not in our garden! Arugula, fennel, chilies, kale, sweet corn. I've decided that we're going to run a sustainable company from the inside out.

BATB: And, what does the man who is set out to make the world a better place - one bar of soap at a time - do for his morning grooming routine?
JO: I wake up and shave; I mix dime-sized amounts of shower gel and body lotion. When I'm done, there's toner and depending on the season Himalayan Geranium & Pomegranate Balancing Oil for an extra protective barrier. And three times a week, I use a scrub.
